There will be a 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place prize for those who lose the most weight in the Fitness Camp.

HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 633 Offered January 20, 1999

Commending Abdul Aswad.

---------- Patrons-- Jones, J.C. and Robinson; Senator: Miller, Y.B. ----------

WHEREAS, for more than 20 years, Abdul Aswad has devoted considerable time, talent, and energy to improving the lives of the young people of Norfolk; and

WHEREAS, a 25-year employee of the Norfolk Southern Corporation, Abdul Aswad holds a bachelor’s degree in social science from Norfolk State University and a master’s degree in urban studies from Norfolk State and Old Dominion Universities; and

WHEREAS, a youth advisor for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People beginning in 1978, Abdul Aswad is a co-founder and vice executive director of Children of the Sun Athletic/Education Foundation; and

WHEREAS, in his lifelong dedication to helping young people make the right choices, Abdul Aswad has also served as a youth mentor for the Norfolk Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, as a youth counselor for the Norfolk Community Services Board, and as a counselor at the Norfolk City Jail; and

WHEREAS, also a middle school soccer coach and a mentor for an entrepreneurship training program, Abdul Aswad has been repeatedly recognized for his tireless and selfless efforts on behalf of young people; and

WHEREAS, Abdul Aswad received a 1982 award for Outstanding Contributions to the Community, a 1983 citation for Leadership and Motivating Youth, a 1992 award for Mentoring, and a 1995 proclamation from Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim; and

WHEREAS, truly dedicated to his community, Abdul Aswad is a rare and valuable resource for the youth of Norfolk; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Abdul Aswad for his sustained volunteer contributions to the City of Norfolk; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Abdul Aswad as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation and gratitude for his many years of invaluable service to his community.
